Apache 2.0, My Two Cents

Tuesday, December 21. 2004

On the PHP Internals mailing list a thread was started when two posts were made on DrBacchus' blog ranting about how pissed off the Apache Community is at the PHP Community because no one in PHP really cares that much about Apache 2.0. I read the PHP thread, read the blog posts, and even took a few minutes to go review the new featureset in Apache 2.0.

The question to me when deciding between Apache 1.3 and Apache 2.0 is basically this: Why would I want to switch? This is a pretty big common theme around the PHP camp. I mean seriously, what does it *really* buy me? I'm going to go through the Apache 2.0 feature set point-by-point -- I absolutely welcome the gentlemen from the Apache camp to comment on my conclusions and show me why I am incorrect.

For your reference you can find the Apache 2.0 new feature list right here.

Vancouver PHP

Friday, December 17. 2004

It's official, I will be returning for the second annual PHP West conference in Vancouver, Canada hosted by Vancouver PHP. Although this is a small conference, it has a great benefit of being very focused and I would hope it is only one of many to come in the upcoming year. I'll be giving a 90 minute talk on web services using PHP 5's new SOAP extension.

If you happen to be on the West Coast, or if you're interested in hearing everything there is to say about Web Services, I suggest you go register today! At a price of only $40 dollars, there's really not a good reason not to!

Is PHP better than Java?

Tuesday, December 14. 2004

As of late there has been a lot of discussion of PHP as it compares to Java. With PHP 5 recently out the door, the newly redesigned object model has added even more fuel to the fires of debate. Being a PHP and Java guy (although admittingly most of my Java experience is from an academic standpoint), I can see benefits and drawbacks to each. Even so, I am very interested in hearing more opinions on the subject so let me pose two questions:

1) For enterprise-class web development, would you perfer to write your application in PHP or Java? Why?

2) We all know about the now infamous switch of Friendster from a Java based architecture to PHP. Does anyone else have any similar stories they'd like to share? I don't care what direction it went (PHP to Java or Java to PHP), I'd just like to hear the reasons for it.

Of course, especially after the corporate responses from the likes of Friendster I understand if there is hesitation in sharing such information. I won't be offended if your comments are made Anonymously and without mentioning any specific company. Of course, you can always <contact me privately< as well.

Civil Darwinism

Friday, December 10. 2004

Today I saw an article which shows what I've coined Civil Darwinism in full effect. What is this crap? Seriously people, I'm sorry but you guys have simply lost your mind if a Presidental election has thrown you into some sort of deep depression.

Look, okay, so Bush got elected and you think it sucks. Well, that's fair -- but let's look at some facts here people. This isn't armageddon, I don't hear any trumpets and the rivers aren't running with blood last time I went into New York City so what the hell is going on here? Normally I put forth a lot of effort to understand other people's perspectives on things, but not this time -- this time you've just gone too far.

GET OVER IT

This isn't about being a Democrat or Republican, this is about your ability to cope with life in a very fundamental way. Post Election Stress Trauma? I thought it was a joke at first, but now I don't know what is more ridiculus -- the fact people lost their marbles over an election, or the fact a doctor actually coined a term for it. What was so tramatic here? You want Tramatic try on a pair of Iraqi shoes as they try not to get shot or blown up on the way to the polls. That not fair of me? You bet your ass it is, there are people over there who are looking to cast their ballot in a few weeks here and wondering if they'll make it through the whole thing alive... I bet the worst you had to do is post-pone your god-damn tee-time to get to the polls. God forbid you had to actually go out of your way to vote. But you sure as hell didn't feel like your life was on the line did you? Well maybe you did, but that's my point -- you're crazy.

Here's another little gem from the article:

“I feel like I live in a dictatorship"

The absolute obscurity of this statement is only matched by the absolute ignorance which allows you to say it. But I guess when you're running on a theory like this it's really easy to make other wack-job assumptions as well. Nope, the media isn't free at all is it? Every two years we hold representative elections and every two years they are completely bullshit right? No one ever really wins but the people who are "supposed" to win, and no one is ever really fighting for our personal interests. Of course that includes the President, who has somehow managed without a single shred of real evidence rigged the election against a real flesh-and-blood candidate. It's all fake, it's all lies and 255 million people have been scammed by a out of control renegade government headed by the Bush Dictatorship. Give me a break, have you ever read about an election in a dictatorship? They have a ballot something like this:

"Completely Fair" Presidential Election, 2004

Do you want <Insert Dictator name here> to be <Insert bullshit title here>

[ ] Yes
[ ] Shoot me in the head

(please select one)

At least they don't have a problem with chads do they? Of course I guess you can put whoever you want on the ballot because every one of those poll workers is working for Bush too and ensured that any ballot marked "Kerry" was actually thrown away and burned.. Oh wait, that was the Ukraine wasn't it? Geez I get my Dictatorships all confused sometimes.

Look, I don't mind if you're upset because Bush won, that's fine. I don't care if you and I differ on this or that when it comes to the way gov't should run, for all I know I might agree with you. But seriously people you guys are clear off the map with this. Then again, I guess I really don't care -- if you remove yourself from the pool of civil opinion by falling off the deep end then it's probably doing us all a big favor. Like I said, Civil Darwinism.

Winter: 1... Me: 0

Wednesday, December 8. 2004

As you all know from my earlier post, I recently took a position with Zend and have been planning on moving to California to their US offices. Although it would have been nice to escape winter, as it turns out I will be remaining in New York City instead. As it turns out, the decision was made that it would be better to have me stay on the Eastern seaboard to deal with local clients, so here I am!

I can't say I am unhappy with the change in plans, the move to California from the other side of the country seemed like a really painful process. I will enjoy not having to deal with that in the year to come!
