SCO's code? Nope

Tuesday, August 19. 2003

For anyone who has been paying attention in the open source community, the big topic of discussion lately has been revolving around SCO's lawsuit against IBM. In this lawsuit, SCO claims that Linux has illegally used code which SCO owns the copyright for.

Well, for those of you who have been following along, lwn.net has this story which provides pictures of slides showing the code SCO claims was in violation of copyright. Based on this code, the article goes into all the ways that this code isn't in copyright violation, as it's been avaialble under the BSD license.

Very interesting read.

What can't Google do

Friday, August 15. 2003

I was just browsing around today and I stumbled accross a really neat little feature in google today. Not only is google the coolest search engine (and the most effective) but it can also be used as a calculator! For instance, check out what happens when you enter "2+2", or "cosine(45)".. but that's just getting warmed up.. here's some more really interesting things google can do:

You can type out numbers: "sixteen plus nine"
You can use roman numerals: "IX+I"
It does conversions such as : "232 inches in light years"
or.. "ten bytes in nibbles"

For the most entertaining answer, try "the answer to life, the universe, and everything"

I wonder a few things

1) Can I access this functionality from the google API?
2) Who writes this stuff? :)

Come see me @ PHP-CON 2003 West

Friday, August 15. 2003

Well, it's offical. For the third conference in a row I'll be at PHP-CON 2003 West in sunny Santa Clara, California October 21st through the 24th. The conference this year has a slightly different format, with the 21st being dedicated to us hard-code programmers in an event called a "code sprint". What's a code sprint? Well, basically it is a day where we all lock ourselves in a room and code our brains out trying to produce a new feature, extension, whatever. After the code sprint the 22nd is tutorials where I will be giving an Advanced graphics tutorial discussing GD and ImageMagick in PHP, and then the 23rd and 24th are the actual conference itself. During the actual conference, I will be giving another talk introducing my new tidy PHP extension and how it is simply the best thing since sliced bread for HTML!

If you live in CA, or live anywhere and want to be at the hottest PHP-centric conference in the country this is the place to be in October. Hopefully see you guys there.

New Member of the Family

Well, there's a new addition to my family -- not a baby per se, but a brand new puppy named Delta. She's just over 8 weeks old, and is absolutely adorable.

Tidy moves to PECL

Friday, August 1. 2003

After fixing a few more bugs, I've moved my Tidy PHP Extension into its new and probably long-term home of the PHP PECL Repository. For those of you who haven't used PECL extensions before, simply check them out like you would the CVS source for PHP:

cvs -d :pserver:cvsread@cvs.php.net:/respository co pecl/tidy
(password: 'phpfi')

and stick the tidy folder in the ext/ directory of PHP. Then, once you have downloaded the Tidy Library compile using:

./configure --with-tidy
make
make install

You can check for it's existance by executing 'php -m' and looking for 'tidy'
