As of late there has been a lot of discussion of PHP as it compares to Java. With PHP 5 recently out the door, the newly redesigned object model has added even more fuel to the fires of debate. Being a PHP and Java guy (although admittingly most of my Java experience is from an academic standpoint), I can see benefits and drawbacks to each. Even so, I am very interested in hearing more opinions on the subject so let me pose two questions:
1) For enterprise-class web development, would you perfer to write your application in PHP or Java? Why?
2) We all know about the now infamous switch of Friendster from a Java based architecture to PHP. Does anyone else have any similar stories they'd like to share? I don't care what direction it went (PHP to Java or Java to PHP), I'd just like to hear the reasons for it.
Of course, especially after the corporate responses from the likes of Friendster I understand if there is hesitation in sharing such information. I won't be offended if your comments are made Anonymously and without mentioning any specific company. Of course, you can always <
contact me privately< as well.
